That is the idea behind one of India’s most enduring little traditions: your date of birth decides what you should carry in your pocket for good luck. Wait, really? According to numerology and birth-date astrology, yes. And the whole system fits on a single page.
First, find your root number
Numerology reduces the day you were born to a single digit called the root number, or Moolank. Born on the 5th? Your root number is 5. Born on the 23rd? Add the digits: 2 + 3 = 5. Born on the 28th? 2 + 8 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. That’s it. The month and year don’t matter for this one; the day does.
Each root number is linked to a planet, and each planet has its favourite objects, colours and even spices. Carry the right one, the belief goes, and you keep that planet on your side.
What to carry, by birth date
Number 1 — born on the 1st, 10th, 19th or 28th

Carry: a copper or gold coin, or a pinch of yellow rice mixed with turmeric.
Your planet is the Sun, so the remedies are fiery and bright. The coin is said to match your confident energy and invite success.
Number 2 — born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th or 29th

Carry: a small silver coin.
The Moon rules Number 2, and silver is the Moon’s metal. The promise is emotional balance, peace and steadier finances.
Number 3 — born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st or 30th

Carry: a small piece of turmeric (haldi) or a scrap of yellow cloth.
Jupiter’s number. Yellow is Jupiter’s colour, and turmeric is about as yellow as nature gets. It is said to draw abundance, wisdom and growth.
Number 4 — born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st

Carry: a square piece of silver or a small cinnamon stick.
Number 4 belongs to Rahu, the shadow planet, and the remedies are all about grounding. A square shape for stability; cinnamon to steady wealth.
Number 5 — born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd

Carry: a few pods of green cardamom.
Mercury’s number, and Mercury loves green. Cardamom in the pocket is said to invite fresh opportunities and clear communication. It also makes your pocket smell wonderful, which nobody complains about.
Number 6 — born on the 6th, 15th or 24th

Carry: fresh rose petals or a small brass item.
Venus, the planet of love and beauty. Roses for relationships, brass for prosperity. The most romantic pocket on this list.
Number 7 — born on the 7th, 16th or 25th

Carry: a small piece of sandalwood (chandan) or a peacock feather.
Ketu’s number, the mystic one. Sandalwood for calm, the feather for intuition and spiritual grounding.
Number 8 — born on the 8th, 17th or 26th

Carry: a black kaudi (cowrie shell).
Saturn’s number. The black cowrie is one of India’s oldest protective charms, believed to ward off negativity and support slow, steady financial gains. Saturn rewards patience.
Number 9 — born on the 9th, 18th or 27th

Carry: a pinch of saffron (kesar) wrapped in a small red paper or cloth.
Mars rules Number 9, and Mars is red through and through. Saffron in red is said to boost your natural drive, strength and vitality.
The fun part
Notice the pattern? Almost everything on this list is a coin, a spice or a plant. Long before wallets and phones, these were the small, valuable, portable things a person could carry. The tradition is really a very old habit of keeping a little bit of value and a little bit of nature close to the body.
And here is the fact that made us smile: three of the nine remedies are things you probably already have in your kitchen. Turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon. Your luck may have been sitting in the spice rack the whole time.
A small note
This is a tradition, not a prescription. Numerology and birth-date astrology are belief systems, and we share them here for the joy of the story, not as advice. Carry the coin, enjoy the cardamom, and stay curious.
